A gunman wearing a gas mask and orange construction vest is on the run in Brooklyn after shooting at least 13 people on a packed subway train in Sunset Park during rush hour Tuesday.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., the gunman is believed to have thrown a smoke bomb onto a southbound R train at the 25th Street station in Brooklyn and began shooting as the train doors slammed shut.

It’s not clear if he fired from the 25th Street station platform or was also on the train, but the injured passengers fell from the train car on 36th Street, terrifying others waiting there to board.

Horrific photos and videos show them writhing on the blood-stained 36th Street platform waiting to be taken to the hospital.

Multiple unexploded devices were found at the 36th Street station, according to the FDNY, but the NYPD says none are active. A bomb squad is on the scene now.

NYPD units are now searching for the gunman.

New York police said they were still searching for the man after the carnage on the R train at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park around 8:30 a.m.

‘Originally, the call went through the subway station like smoke. Upon arrival, officers found multiple people with gunshots and unexploded devices. Thirteen people are injured. This is still an active scene,” an FDNY spokesperson said.

Shocking video showed blood-covered victims strewn on the ground in the subway station as smoke billowed from the train.

A person was seen lying motionless on the ground with his hands over his face and his legs raised after the terrifying attack.

Others had lost their shoes and ripped their clothes when the New York subway’s public address system sent messages to passengers.

Passengers were yelled at to get on a different train for safety while the injured were treated by emergency services.

Eric Adams’ spokesman said on Twitter: ‘@NYCAmayor continues to be briefed on the situation. As we gather more information, we ask New Yorkers to stay away from this area for their safety and so first responders can help those in need and investigate.”

New York City Sunset Park Councilwoman Alexa Aviles said, “We are aware of reports of a shooting at the 36th St subway station, and are in contact with our city partners and NYPD. New York on the scene”.

She added: ‘Please be careful and look for alternative travel routes. We will share more details as they become available.

Senator Kevin Parker said: ‘Scary report from Sunset Park. We have to move New York forward and break this cycle of gun violence. Hoping everyone is well.

Chi Osse, a member of the New York City Council for Brooklyn, said: ‘Horrible news to hear this morning. Praying for the safety and recovery of our neighbors in Sunset Park. This madness must end.

The New York City Public Defender’s Office Jumaane D. Williams said, “Our office is monitoring the information coming out of Sunset Park and praying for the New Yorkers who have been shot in this horrific act of gun violence.”
