Napoli have unveiled a statue with a golden left foot in honor of club legend Diego Maradona.
The Italian club paid an emotional tribute this Saturday, one day before what would have been the 62nd birthday of the iconic Argentine striker, who died in November 2020.
And Luciano Spalletti’s side marked the occasion with a 4-0 thrashing of Sassuolo thanks to Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, named after their former star, to take a further lead in the highest in the table.

Football writer Sacha Pisani tweeted: “It is fitting that on what would have been Diego Maradona’s 62nd birthday, Napoli is hosting another master class.” At this stage, it is not surprising. But after the tribute before the match, Diego would be proud.
A giant banner of Maradona was placed on the pitch, with his image filling the screen at the stadium in southern Italy.

The diminutive former star, who won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina, also represented Boca Juniors and Barcelona in a glittering career.
After his death, Napoli quickly named their pitch after him, retiring the number 10 jersey and unveiling a statue, to be joined by the new statue.
Spalletti has led his team to a new club record of 12 consecutive wins, overtaking Maradona’s 1986 side, a run that sees them perched atop the Serie A table, five points clear of Atalanta in the second place.
