Summer signing Lisandro Martinez is ‘proud’ of the way he has managed to build a reputation for Manchester United fans to back.
The defender was signed in a £50m transfer from Ajax as Erik ten Hag’s first major contract as Red Devils boss, however his arrival was met with criticism as pundits and fans were concerned that Martínez did not have the physique to face the Premier League.
But despite his smaller stature, Martinez has managed to prove himself an important part of United’s improvement and has begun to garner the support of the club’s fans.

Man United fans chanted ‘Argentina, Argentina’ in support of the defender
He told MUTV: ‘I am very happy. I’m a bit surprised, but at the same time I feel very proud.
“Coming here to the best club in the world and people say ‘Argentina, Argentina’, it’s incredible. Thanks to the fans for their support.”
The central defender has formed a strong partnership with former Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, and this partnership has helped the club win five of the previous six games.
The defender has been part of Man United’s recent improvement with his performances.
This includes the Europa League win over FC Sheriff at the Zimbru Stadium in Moldova, when Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the goals to seal victory for the traveling team.
The 24-year-old, however, will soon be leaving Manchester as he will fly out to play for Argentina in friendly matches against Honduras and Jamaica.
Martinez was due to take part this weekend with the rest of the Manchester United team, but the Premier League match against Leeds at Old Trafford was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes the international break will be useful
Boss Ten Hag has admitted that the break is ‘useful’ as it will allow the club to have meetings to further strengthen the team.
He said: ‘It’s very useful. We have a lot of meetings, we have to improve the structures in and around the club. We will also look at the window in January or next summer already to improve our way of playing by making plans.
‘Of course, [you get these] periods after a game, but we have to be ready for that and a lot of players, let’s say 90 per cent, are out.
‘But the rest, we are going to train properly and for the rest we have to prepare very well. I hope everyone stays fit and comes back healthy and then we have to attack.”
