The Three Lions boss named a 28-man squad on Thursday ahead of Nations League games with Italy and Germany this month.

The headline news was that Southgate kept faith with Manchester United’s underdog pair Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, while Jadon Sancho, Conor Gallagher and Marcus Rashford were left out.

Ivan Toney received his first England call-up after his brilliant early-season form for Brentford, while Eric Dier earned a call-up to the squad as he hasn’t played for his country since November 2020.

Many felt that Sancho should have been chosen after returning to form for Manchester United this season.

Maguire’s call-up, along with Sancho’s absence, caused the greatest anger among English fans, who were quick to express their opinion on social media.

One fan said: ‘Shaw and Maguire are part of the England team but Sancho and Rashford are not? Ok man lol.’

Another joked: “How the hell did Maguire make the ENGLAND team?!?!?!?”

This sentiment was echoed by another fan, who highlighted how Arsenal defender Ben White had had a hard time getting lost.

They said, ‘How the hell do Coady and Maguire get on this squad about Ben White?’

This view was backed up elsewhere: ‘Ben White is fast becoming one of the most underrated players in the Premier League. Absolutely outrageous to leave him out of an England team that includes Harry Maguire and Conor Coady.

Meanwhile, United striker Jadon Sancho has started to show signs of being back to his best so far this year with Erik ten Hag scoring twice in the Premier League.

After being a member of the England squad at Euro 2020, he was expected to be called up and fans were not happy to see the former Borussia Dortmund star miss out.

One said: ‘Southgate’s picks don’t make sense. He dropped Sancho when Ole wasn’t playing with him, fair enough. But why is Luke Shaw selected when he no longer starts? Why are they calling out Grealish and Mount when they’re in such bad shape right now?’

Another said: ‘Not Sancho but Grealish? I thought Southgate had to do with the form? Also, why not take this opportunity before the World Cup to call up Marcus Edwards and see what he’s like in the team?

Another fan stated: “Ben White and Sancho really unlucky not to be part of that team… Southgate selecting a bunch of players who can’t get into their first team and closing the World Cup door on those two.”
