Mark Wood has admitted he is “concerned” about returning to Pakistan for the England Test series next month due to the attempted assassination of Imran Khan.

England’s fastest bowler is concerned about possible unrest in Pakistan after Pakistan’s former captain and prime minister was shot in the leg at a political rally in the city of Gujranwala, two and a half hours from Lahore.

“Obviously not great,” Wood said ahead of Saturday’s Twenty20 World Cup finals match against Sri Lanka here. “First of all, he is a former cricketer, so he is close to home.

“They took very good care of us when we were in Pakistan before this trip, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried because we will come back when there are problems.

It will be the people above me who decide what happens. We trust our security guys and if they say it’s okay, we’ll go, but I don’t know if this changes things.

Imran was in stable condition after the incident in which one person was reported killed and several others injured.

The World Cup-winning Pakistan captain was on the seventh day of a national tour during which he held rallies calling for early elections in the country.

England must play three Tests in a long-awaited return to Pakistan after the success of the Twenty20 leg of the trip in September and October, when they won a seven-match series 4-3.

A spokesman for England said the ECB was monitoring the situation but it was too early to pass judgment on a tour that will start when England arrives in Pakistan via a warm-up in the United Arab Emirates on November 26.
