The Justice Department has issued 40 subpoenas seeking information about the actions of former President Donald J. Trump and his associates in connection with the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021 attack on Capitol Hill.
Boris Epshteyn and Mike Roman, both Trump advisers, had their phones confiscated as evidence, the New York Times reports.
The action represents a kind of escalation in the investigation that comes just two months before the midterm elections, after several months of relative calm.
The Jan. 6 investigation coincides with a separate investigation into Trump’s storage of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home.

The Department of Justice has issued 40 subpoenas seeking information on the actions of former President Donald J. Trump and his associates in connection with the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021 attack on Capitol Hill.
Other names the Justice Department has been in contact with who are close to the former president include Dan Scavino, Trump’s former social media director.
Scavino began working for Trump at one of his golf courses and rose through the ranks to become one of his most loyal aides. He remains a Trump adviser.
The Times reports how the Justice Department executed search warrants to seize electronic devices from people involved in the “fake voter effort” who lived in swing states, including Epshteyn and Roman, who was a Trump campaign strategist.
Federal agents seized the pair of advisers’ electronic devices last week.
Bernard Kerik, a former New York City police commissioner who promoted unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud along with his friend, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, was also subpoenaed by prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington. .
