Tech Mahindra Supports Moonlighting as It Is a Digital Company, CEO Says

Tech Mahindra, an early backer of the moonlighting, is a digital company and not a legacy, which makes it support secondary activities, a senior official said Tuesday. The Mahindra group company has yet to come up with a policy on this aspect because it needs to be something that complies with local laws in more than 90 countries where it operates, the company’s managing director and chief executive officer, CP Gurnani, told reporters.

Moonlighting has become an issue that has divided the otherwise united $220 billion (roughly Rs. 18, 20, 600) Indian IT industry, with companies like Wipro, TCS, IBM going public with their concerns about it.

“There is a difference between legacy and digital (company). We are a digital company,” Gurnani told reporters, when asked if he was surprised by how his peers reacted to the issue.

Gurnani was quick to add that he does not wish to comment on the competition.

In a broad sense, ‘digital’ refers to new age arrangements that go beyond those structured in older forms of service delivery.

Gurnani said the company expects employees to come forward and disclose that they are employed by another company, adding that key aspects such as values, ethics and transparency should not be compromised.

“As CEO, I’m happy if someone is productive… All I’m saying is take leave and tell us what you’re working on. It helps him or her too,” Gurnani said.

He made it clear that there is currently no policy in the company that allows any of its more than 1.63 lakh employees to take two jobs without permission and made it clear that he can also act if he detects any violations.
