With Wolves seeing summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic suffer an ACL injury on his debut, meaning he is at risk of missing the rest of the season, Bruno Lage needed reinforcements and landed a bold free transfer to sign to Costa.

The Wolves announced Costa’s arrival with a bizarre video on social media.

The 33-year-old can be seen walking a pack of dogs representing the Wolves, the club’s nickname.

The scene of the video seems to be the esplanade of the Molineux stadium, which has not been illuminated and is covered in shadows, from which Costa emerges.

The video is subtitled at the end with ‘Diego es un lobo’ confirming his place in the club for the next season.

The forward admitted he thought the experience of filming with the animals was “great” but admitted he was “scared to death”.

In the announcement video, Costa told the club’s website: “I was scared to death. Holding that chain I kept thinking, ‘What if this wolf thinks to jump on me?’ and then the three of them did.” .

‘Because the lady who trained them kept calling them, asking them to move a little and the dog, the wolves did nothing. And I thought: ‘If they are not doing anything with the coach, if they come’… when they came and smelled my foot, I knew I was finished.

So I was a little scared. Those were wolves, not dogs. It was a cool experience but not very comfortable. I have five dogs, but they are not wolves!

Costa spent three years at Chelsea from 2014 to 2017, scoring 52 times in 89 appearances and helping the Blues win two league titles.

Costa initially saw his work permit application rejected, but Wolves’ appeal was upheld on Wednesday and he was able to complete his medical in the Midlands on Thursday.

Wolves had to go ahead with plans for a striker in case Costa’s work permit appeal was denied and the club seriously considered a move for Andy Carroll as their Plan B.

Carroll, also 33, he has been without a club since leaving West Brom following the expiration of his contract in July, leaving him free to move elsewhere without needing to pay a transfer fee.

Carroll, who has played for Liverpool, West Ham and Newcastle in his career, has recently been on the books at West Brom and Reading, falling to the Championship after leaving Newcastle for the second time last year.

Goals have been the big problem for Wolves, who remain winless so far this season and injuries to Kalajdzic and Raúl Jiménez have left Lage painfully short.

Costa’s acquisition on a short-term deal represents a huge blow given his involvement in English football.

Costa has won five league titles in three countries during a career that has seen him make 26 international appearances, two of which were for Brazil before switching allegiance to Spain in 2013.
