Tory leadership frontrunner Liz Truss to lay down the law and order police to ‘get back to basics’

liz truss will lay down the law on police today by ordering them to investigate real crimes instead of petty online disputes.

the conservative leadership leader says he will make streets safer by forcing police chiefs to ‘go back to basics’ and holding them to account with tough targets.

If she becomes prime minister, she will expect the forces to reduce rates of murder, violence and neighborhood crime such as robbery and theft by 20 percent over the next two years, and publish league tables to highlight which are the worst performers.

The heads of the failed forces would have to explain their plans to turn things around at special meetings chaired by the Home Secretary, while the officers would be asked to visit the homes of each robbery victim.

Miss Truss’s harsh approach comes amid growing concern about the number of police forces in England and Wales disappointing victims of crime and the public, despite a large number of new bobbies being recruited.

The police watchdog has put six forces into “special measures” while former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick was forced to leave Scotland Yard for failing to address its toxic culture.

Last night, Miss Truss said: ‘People across our country want criminals locked up and crime prevented, so they feel safe on their streets.

“We and our fantastic Conservative Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) have made good progress since the 2019 election, with over 13,000 new police officers on the streets and increased powers and resources that have a real impact on communities across the country, but we now have to go further and faster.

“It’s time for law enforcement to get back to basics and spend their time investigating real crimes, not Twitter lines and hurt feelings. People can trust me to deliver and these league tables will help hold police accountable, making our streets safer and our country more prosperous.’

Miss Truss has previously ordered Whitehall to stop using ‘awakened’ unconscious bias courses and will take a similar approach with the police if she becomes prime minister.

She will give PPCs greater powers to veto training that focuses on identity politics and ensure that training for officers focuses on key issues like domestic abuse. Miss Truss will also ask the forces to stop investigating online discussions as potential hate crimes.

He will check that new guidance on so-called “non-crime hate incidents” protects free speech and means officers police the streets instead of social media.

A campaign source said: “Thieves, thugs and murderers should expect to be taken off our streets and thrown behind bars, but it is unfortunate that some police chiefs are not cracking down as they should.” Liz will keep her feet on the fire, and these newly released statistics will help the public do the same.’

But police chiefs are likely to be wary of measuring their forces against national benchmarks given that some cover large cities while others are responsible for sparsely populated rural areas.

Experts have also long warned that focusing police on particular targets means they ignore other crimes and may try to “game” the numbers.
