A video on social media showed Sancho’s car mobbed by United fans and he was handed a specially designed pair of shin guards with his face on them.

Later, the boy’s father said that he would have to wear them to a match, and Sancho did so.

The 22-year-old added: “It was very important that we get the win today. Obviously our last home game against Real Sociedad was a surprise and coming into this game we knew we had to get all three points today.

Despite being fully fit and in good goalscoring form, Sancho missed out on England’s Nations League squad named by manager Gareth Southgate on Thursday, the last team named before the winter World Cup in Qatar.

Sancho replied: “Obviously it’s disappointing not to get the call-up, but again, I have to keep working hard and I hope to get the call-up for the World Cup.” I just have to focus on myself and keep working hard.’
