How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook

how to screenshot on chromebook

Screenshots are the best way to capture what you see on your screen and save it as an image file on your computer or laptop. Google’s Chromebook laptops allow you to take screenshots, which are images of your entire computer screen or an individual window, with one keystroke or button click. This article will show you how to take a screenshot on a Chromebook laptop.

Take a Screenshot

All Chromebooks come with a keyboard shortcut that allows you to capture your current screen and save it as an image. By default, pressing Ctrl+Window Switcher captures your entire desktop while pressing Shift+Window Switcher takes only a portion of your screen. You can also press Ctrl+Alt+M to open Crosh (Chrome OS’s command line) and type in crosh>screenshot –area=100%x100% where 100% is how big you want your screenshot and 100% is how big you want it zoomed out after taking it. The crosh prompt then lets you specify which directory to place the image in.

Open the image in Paint

While taking a screenshot of your entire screen can be done by pressing Ctrl + F5, that method doesn’t work if you just want to grab an image of an individual window. In that case, you can download and install Google’s free Paint app. Simply right-click an image in your browser or any other program and select Open image in new tab. This will open Paint with your selected image ready for editing. Click File > Save as. In order to save it as a PNG, click Export type then choose PNG under Format. Give it a name and choose where you want to save it; all done! You’ll find your newly saved file in whatever location you chose.

Crop your image

Once you’ve taken your screenshot, open it in an image-editing app. You may be able to crop it right there and then; if not, move it over to your computer and save it as a JPEG. If you have an Android phone, consider using Google Drive—it automatically uploads pictures that are saved from your device. You can also use Evernote or Dropbox for similar auto-uploading purposes.

Select save as

After you’ve taken your screenshot, navigate your browser to Save as (Chrome) or File>Save As (Firefox). This will allow you save your picture in either PNG or JPEG format. If you want to crop out any extraneous parts of your image, use your photo editing software’s cropping tool. Just make sure not to cut off anything important. It can be very frustrating having an awesome picture only to realize that it didn’t include half of someone’s face. Be careful! You do have some ability to edit images after they have been saved, but why not spend some time while you’re taking pictures?

Gather Up Your Files!

To take a screenshot on your Chromebook, press Ctrl + Shift + S. This will save it as an image in your Downloads folder. After that, open up Chrome and go to Files and right-click on Downloads. You should see an option called Open as window or something similar. Select that and you should be able to see all of your screenshots in one place. From there, you can create folders or tag them with labels if you want!
