Neurology Sub-specialties

Since the nervous system is complex, a neurologist may specialize in a particular field. Sub-specialties of neurology are-

  • Autonomic Diseases
  • Child Neurology
  • Epilepsy
  • Geriatric Neurology
  • Headache Medicine
  • Intervention Neuroradiology
  • Neurocritical Care
  • Neuromuscular Medicine
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Pain Medicine
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Vascular

What does a Neurologist Do?

Neurologists are known for treating a wide range of neurological disorders like:

  • Birth defects- Spinal Bifida
  • Medical Conditions- Strokes, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s
  • Tumors
  • Concussions and Strokes

When to See a Neurologist?

Some several symptoms or signs could prompt a referral to a neurologist by your regular doctor, including-

  • Severe headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Chronic Pain
  • Intense Muscle weakness
  • Problem in walking
  • Daily tremors

If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, talk to your regular doctor or consult a neurologist immediately.

What should you expect during your visit to a neurologist?

If you visit a neurologist regarding any symptoms of neurological diseases, you will have to take a physical exam which tests your coordination, reflexes, vision, strength, mental health, etc. Other procedures that a neurologist may conduct are-

  • MRI- You will be asked to lie down inside a machine for about half an hour. This test is conducted to take pictures of your brain through magnetic fields and radio waves.
  • CT Scan- To create multidimensional images of your body, x-rays and computers are used.
  • EEG- In this test, electrodes are attached to your scalp to record the electrical activity of your brain. EEG picks up the electrical impulses through which neurons in the brain communicate with other neurons. EEG can be used to identify and treat certain conditions such as-
  1. Epilepsy
  2. Seizures
  3. Brain tumors
  • TCD- It measures your brain’s blood flow by using sound waves.
  • Lumbar Puncture- To collect a sample of spinal fluid, neurologists use a lumbar puncture. This procedure is done to help diagnose several conditions like-
  1. Meningitis
  2. Leukemia
  3. Dementia
  4. Autoimmune diseases
  5. Bleeding in the brain

Small needles called electrodes will be inserted into the muscle to record every electrical activity that occurs in the muscle tissue. The record produced by an EMG is called an electromyogram.
