Cricket Australia appoint Andrew McDonald as men’s head coach

Andrew McDonald has been confirmed as the man to lead Australia through upcoming tours to Sri Lanka and India, the T20 World Cup, an Ashes away series and beyond after being officially unveiled as Justin Langer’s replacement as manager. in chief

McDonald had been in the job on an interim basis since Langer resigned in February and oversaw the recent tour to Pakistan, where Australia won a closely-contested Test series 1-0, lost a three-match ODI series 2-1 and won a single T20.

He joined the national setup in 2019 after leading Victoria and Melbourne Renegades to all three domestic competition titles during the 2018-19 season, and will now take charge of the men’s team after signing a four-year deal.

He inherits a team that has enjoyed substantial recent success with last year’s T20 World Cup victory followed by a dominant Ashes series victory over England.

“The journey so far has been particularly enjoyable and I am honored to have this incredible opportunity for what is an exciting period ahead,” said McDonald. “The success of the World Cup, the Ashes series and now Pakistan has been a testament to Justin’s hard work and leadership. “My plan is to build on the growth, depth and experience of the team while working collectively with the group and across the game. There are a lot of short-term challenges that I know excite the leadership group, the players and the coaching staff.”

Cricket Australia interviewed a number of candidates for the job, which CEO Nick Hockley said was “one of the biggest in Australian sport”.

“Andrew has already proven himself to be an exceptional head coach and the vision he outlined for the role during the appointment process was impressive and exciting, making him our clear choice,” Hockley said.

“We are proud of the way the team played and the respect shown throughout the tour of Pakistan under the leadership of Andrew, Pat and Aaron, and we are very pleased that Andrew is taking over the role permanently.”

McDonald will take charge of the team in all three formats, though given the scale of that task, some white ball runs may be overseen by an assistant coach.
