Chelsea have approached PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

The west London club initially backtracked on their search for the midfield anchor three weeks ago, after the 24-year-old signed a new five-year deal with the Eredivisie giants.

But since then the Blues have revived their interest in the hope of luring Sangare to Stamford Bridge before the summer deadline, keen to bolster the engine room damaged by injuries to Thomas Tuchel.

Frustrated by injuries to Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante, the German manager suffered a midfield headache during defeats to Southampton and Leeds.

Kovacic made his return from the bench during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to the Saints on Tuesday and replaced midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has been deployed mainly on the right flank so far this season.

With Kante still sidelined, the Blues have approached PSV about negotiating a deal for Sangare, keen to find a conventional defensive midfielder to protect the back five.

The Ivorian international has enjoyed a fruitful start to the campaign in Eindhoven, scoring three goals in eight appearances in all competitions.

Sangare made 49 appearances in total last season and helped PSV to runners-up in the Eredivisie, narrowly losing the title by two points to champions Ajax.

If an agreement is reached before the deadline, the midfielder would be Chelsea’s seventh addition in the summer window after Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Gabriel Slonina, Carney Chukwuemeka and Kalidou Koulibaly.
