Championship roundup: Mitrovic extends Fulham’s lead at the top

Aleksandar Mitrovic scores the 38th league goal of the season Fulham a 1-0 victory in Middlesbrough and lifted them 11 points clear at the top of the Championship.

Mitrovic headed in a Harry Wilson free kick to break the tie in the 74th minute as the Cottagers took advantage of the defeat of their nearest automatic promotion rivals Bournemouth.

It was Fulham’s 13th away league win this season in their fifth successive away game, as goal machine Mitrovic scored his 41st goal in 45 appearances in all competitions.

Boro, seeking a third successive league victory, saw their playoff hopes take a hit when they dropped out of the top six, two points behind Sheffield United, albeit with a game to go.

Second classified Bournemouth fell to their first defeat in six league games, losing 2–0 at west brom. Early goals from Alex Mowatt and Andy Carroll in the space of four minutes gave West Brom control at interval and, although Bournemouth increased the pressure in the second half, they created few clear chances.

nottingham forest climbed back into the play-off places when they beat coventry 2-0 at the City Field. Brennan Johnson’s 14th league goal of the season gave Forest a half-time lead and James Garner added a second in the 61st minute.

Forest extended their unbeaten streak in the league to nine games and moved up to fifth place, with two games remaining for the other three teams in the play-off places.
