Allies point to Cameron’s record as the only Tory leader to win a majority in the House of Commons in the past 27 years, saying that at the age of just 52, he has “three decades of public service” remaining.

A source said last night that Cameron’s friends had quietly asked questions about the position in Sevenoaks, one of the safest Conservative seats in the country, after the expected retirement of incumbent MP Sir Michael Fallon.

However, Cameron has denied that he plans to re-enter the House of Commons.

Conservative MPs also say Osborne, who holds various jobs including editor of the London Evening Standard, had told friends he had considered running for Kensington, the once-safe Conservative seat, and became Labor in 2017.

The claim was made public in a WhatsApp group for MPs who support Brexit last week, with a warning that the return had been discussed at a dinner two weeks ago.
